| Help at Every Door: VA recognizes that with homelessness, one size does not fit all. Index: Veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless can get help through referrals in any of the VA New York Harbor clinics, or they can just walk into the Department of Social Work at any campus. VA’s “No Wrong Door” approach to homeless Veterans means that a Veteran who is homeless or at risk of being homeless can get help through referrals in any of the VA New York Harbor clinics, or they can just walk into the Department of Social Work at any campus, said Triage Coordinator Bonnie Gang, LCSW (Manhattan campus). Gang’s role in assisting homeless Veterans is providing Triage as the Veteran’s first step in securing assistance. “What’s great about this is that I can find out exactly what the situation is,” said Gang. “Then, I can guide the Veteran to take whatever steps are needed to move the process forward. If these services are available at VA, we work to secure them. If services are provided by an outside cooperating agency, we work with that agency or direct the Veteran to a specific resource,” Gang explained. VA recognizes that with homelessness, one size does not fit all. "Triage Social Workers are committed to identifying exactly what serves will best support a Veterans needs,” said Gang. Recently, for example, an Army Veteran’s most immediate problem was that without a voucher entitling him to housing, he was at immediate risk of losing custody of his children. "The Veteran met a sympathetic landlord at one of the Meet & Greet networking sessions VA hosts on Mondays and he told us about the situation. We were then able to expedite the issue of an appropriate voucher. So, now the Veteran is no longer of losing custody. He has housing,” Gang said. Gang said that in addition to homeless assessment and referral, VA’s Homeless Prevention and Intervention services include emergency shelter placement, transitional housing resources, information on supportive housing, employment services, and homeless services for female Veterans and Veterans with dependent children.
